To disable shadow mapping now it's needed to create a new shader, it would be nice if it's a flag for the model.shader.
So large terrain objects that don't want shadow mapping can use the model.shader.

Disabling shadows for specific objects is certainly useful. What you propose is one option. Another way would be a scene node flag which - when set - will completely skip an object when shadow maps are generated.
