How to create animated overlays? I don't mean simple move/rot/scaling by coding, I mean something like loading animated gif/mng anims with alpha channel.

Is there anyway to load and draw them directly? [without using materials/textures]

if you have all your overlay "states" like this, in a single image:

you can "animate" it by drawing each time another part of it. you can set wich parts are drown by setting different uvs for each corner in the showOverlay() method.
